Well it’s been an interesting week. Only one week into his presidency, President Trump has upset pretty much everyone at this point. The United Kingdom, currently has more than 500,000 signatures on a petition requesting Trump not be allowed to make his upcoming trip to the UK. Well, sort of…
Cancel Trump Visit
In the UK the government responds to all petitions which receive 10,000 signatures or more. When a petition reaches 100,000 signatures, it is then considered for debate within Parliament.
Now this petition calls for Trump to be allowed into the country, however, it requests that he NOT to be invited to meet with her majesty, the Queen, due to his (as the petition states) “well documented misogyny and vulgarity”. This comes after Prime Minister Theresa May, during her recent visit to Washington, announced that Trump accepted an invitation from the Queen to visit the UK later in the year.
No Immigration Ban
All of this is more about his recent stance on immigration, as it comes on the heels of his recent executive order. Through this petition, the UK is sending a clear message to the leader of the free world that he is not welcome, as long as his immigration ban remains in place.
People all over the U.S. have united in protest to fight for travelers who are being detained. In my eyes the people of the UK, taking a stand like this, shows that they don’t want further discrimination against muslims, let alone work with a leader who has clearly drawn a line in the sand.
What are your thoughts on this? Do you think President Trump is making the right moves for our country. Or do you, like a majority of the U.S. and now UK, feel the world needs to continue to take action and speak up?
