This is getting exhausting. Before I start, let me remind you that this is an opinion site. That said, let me explain why I feel Trump is out of control and acting like a coward.
As of last night President Trump has gone ahead and fired the acting Atternoy General Sally Yates for, as the White House states, “refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States,”.
Okay, so that is not the cowardly part of this story. What makes Trump a coward (again, in MY opinion) is the way he handled it. Rather than pick up the phone and call Yates to dismiss her, he sent a hand-delivered letter to her. Seriously? Now I understand you’re a business man and part of you public appeal is that you’re not a traditional politician. That you’ll also run the country like a business, which some feel should be done. However, big businesses generally (not all) have no heart what so fever as it relates to employees. People are viewed as expendable. Trump has been labeled as this kind of business leader in the past. But we can’t run America like a callus business. That said, he’s the leader of the free world…he can’t pick up a phone to speak frankly to his “employee”?
Hell, even on his reality show “The Apprentice” Trump looked someone in the eye when he fired them. Wait…that’s TV. Not reality. NOW we see what he does in real life and what kind of leader his is.
Out of Control
Trump representatives are claiming that Yates betrayed the Department of Justice with her actions. Believe it or not, I understand their stance. It’s an executive order from the President of the United States. The goal IS to protect the American people, I get all of that.
What’s concerning to me, and why I believe Trump is out of control, is the fact that there is an inability to take a moment and reflect. Meaning…people are protesting, the acting Attorney General is not supporting an executive order. Shouldn’t those two things make an administration pause for a moment and ask themselves, is the order to vague? Clearly their answer is no.
Yates made her decision, not just because of protests against the executive order, but also after four federal judges ruled against Trump’s order. What happened to those other four? Nothing. The Yates dismissal only acted as a symbol that “the law” and the “Constitution” don’t matter.
The Trump presidency has started off as an “It’s my way or the highway” rather than real discussion or debate. Perhaps I’m naive but, I thought we made decisions for our country based on facts and not just feelings. As everyone knows by now the seven countries listed in the travel ban are NOT areas that are believed to be exporters of terrorism. The order generalizes and lumps a religion into a category that is unfair. That’s not who we are or what America is about.
So Who’s Next?
White House officials say that Dana Boente was sworn in as the AG last night at 9 p.m. He was the US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. So of course, as the first action in his temporary gig and only just a few hours after his appointment, Boente rescinds Yates’ order, instructing the Department Of Justice to “defend the lawful orders of our President.”
Shocker, I know.
Now, again, this is my opinion. I’m sure that some of you wont agree with me, while others might. That’s what I want to know. Let’s talk about this issue and discuss. Please share you thoughts and feeling, good or bad. That’s what America is about. Plus I’d love to know what you think.
